about

One night, I was reading liner notes of a Billie Holiday box-set. There was a story about an inmate who made a picture frame from matchsticks and mailed it to her. She kept it on a shelf in her home. It got me thinking about the man who made it and what he might've been thinking. That became "20,000 Matchsticks." The other songs on this album all began the same way: I'd read an interview or a story, or saw a photo and imagined my way into small parts of her life and the lives of those who felt for her. It's all rather bittersweet, an album of loss and hope...a tribute to private memories, the kind hat make you smile and sigh. And maybe even laugh now and then.
